Read a website's Overview tab
The Overview tab of a hosting answers whether the site is all right and links to where each thing is fixed. Open it first when you look at a site.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- You have access to the site. Any user with access can read this tab. Check now and Measure now need manage access to the site and the Edit hosting config permission.
Read the tiles and the grade
Section titled “Read the tiles and the grade”- Open Hostings in the sidebar and click the site.
- Read the row of tiles: Health, HTTPS, Last backup and Uptime monitor. Each tile links to the section that acts on it.
- Read the Health card. It lists each check with a coloured dot and a sentence, and each failing line says where to fix it.
The grade comes from a score out of 100. Each problem subtracts points:
| Check | Points off |
|---|---|
| Hosting active | 40 |
| Trusted HTTPS certificate | 20 |
| Recent backup | 15 |
| WordPress up to date (WordPress sites) | 10 |
| Uptime monitoring | 5 |
| Disk headroom | 5 from 75% of the disk quota, 15 from 90% |
The grades are A from 90, B from 75, C from 60, D from 40 and F below that.
The buttons above the tiles open Preview site (see Preview a website before its DNS moves), WP admin, phpMyAdmin, Back up now, Move / copy and Audit trail, which opens the audit log filtered to this site.
Check pages, links and images
Section titled “Check pages, links and images”Pages, links and images finds dead links, missing images and stylesheets that fail to load. It requests the site from its own node with the site’s hostname pinned, so it tests the copy this server serves, whatever the domain’s DNS points at.
- Click Check now. A walk reads up to 8 pages and checks up to 40 links and images across them, as real requests against the site.
- Read the pill:
nothing broken,<n> broken,<n> to look atorcould not check. The line below it shows how many pages answered, how many links and images were checked, and the typical and slowest response times. - Fix what the table names, then click Check now again.
Sites on a care plan are walked once a week. Other sites are walked only when you click. The check cannot tell you a layout is wrong or a photo is the wrong one. That is what the monthly check on the care card is for. See Put a site on a care plan.
Measure Core Web Vitals
Section titled “Measure Core Web Vitals”The Core Web Vitals card shows loading speed (LCP), layout shift (CLS) and responsiveness (INP). They need a browser to render the page, so they come from the source chosen under Settings, Customer letters, Core Web Vitals. See Change customer letters and the email logo.
- Click Measure now. The button is shown when a source is set and you may use it.
- Read the values. The pill
real visitorsmeans Google’s field data. The pilllab testmeans one synthetic run.
Sites on a care plan are also measured on the Re-measure schedule set there.
Check that it worked
Section titled “Check that it worked”After Check now, the card shows checked <time> ago. After Measure now, the card shows values with their source.
If it fails
Section titled “If it fails”could not check: the walk could not start. The yellow box says why, for example that the node did not answer.- “No Core Web Vitals source is set for this site’s node.”: pick a source under Settings, Customer letters.
- “This site’s node is set to measure with a local Lighthouse, but Lighthouse is not installed there.”: install it on that node, or switch to Google PageSpeed Insights.
- A low grade with only Recent backup yellow: turn on a schedule. See Back up a site and set a schedule.
